Drones, gold, and threats: Sudan's war raises regional tensions
On May 4, Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a barrage of suicide drones at Port Sudan, the army's de facto wartime capital on the Red Sea. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) accused foreign actors of supporting the RSF's attacks and even threatened to sever ties with one of its biggest trading partners. The RSF surprised many with the strikes. It had used drones before, but never hit targets as far away as Port Sudan, which used to be a haven, until last week. "The strikes … led to a huge displacement from the city. Many people left Port Sudan," Aza Aera, a local relief worker, told Al Jazeera.

North Korea's Kim supervises test of AI suicide drones
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test of suicide drones with artificial intelligence technology and said unmanned control and AI capability must be the top priorities in modern arms development, state media reported on Thursday. Kim inspected new upgraded reconnaissance drones that are capable of detecting various tactical targets and enemy activities on land and at sea, the KCNA state news agency said. "The field of unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence should be top-prioritized and developed in modernizing the armed forces," KCNA quoted Kim as saying.
Iran showcases new weapons as it prepares for a rocky 2025
Tehran, Iran – Iran's army and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been showcasing and testing new defensive and offensive weapons in large-scale military exercises for the past three months. The country is preparing for another tumultuous year amid threats by the United States and Israel to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities, critical energy infrastructure, and military sites. Iran is also promising a third iteration of its major military strikes on Israel, in retaliation for Israeli attacks amid the devastating war on Gaza. The exercises – Eqtedar, Zolfaqar and Great Prophet – have been held across Iran, the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. The weapons tested show Iran intends to maintain its defiance of Israel and the West, refusing to negotiate with US President Donald Trump under his "maximum pressure" policy and continuing to advance its nuclear programme.

U.S. approves sale of more than 1,000 'suicide drones' to Taiwan
The U.S. on Tuesday approved the sale of 360 million worth of armed drones and loitering munitions to Taiwan as Washington doubles down on helping Taipei counter a potential Chinese attack on the self-ruled island. The move reflects U.S. efforts to not only bolster the self-ruled island's asymmetric capabilities but also to use drone swarms to offset any Chinese military advantages in personnel and equipment in a possible conflict -- a strategy also embraced by Taipei as it draws lessons from the war in Ukraine. Announced by U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the potential sale, which must be approved by Congress, includes 291 warhead-equipped Altius-600M drones and 720 Switchblade 300 anti-personnel and anti-armor loitering munitions, marking the 15th arms package approved by U.S. President Joe Biden's administration.

Anduril's New Drone Killer Is Locked on to AI-Powered Warfare
After Palmer Luckey founded Anduril in 2017, he promised it would be a new kind of defense contractor, inspired by hacker ingenuity and Silicon Valley speed. The company's latest product, a jet-powered, AI-controlled combat drone called Roadrunner, is inspired by the grim reality of modern conflict, especially in Ukraine, where large numbers of cheap, agile suicide drones have proven highly deadly over the past year. "The problem we saw emerging was this very low-cost, very high-quantity, increasingly sophisticated and advanced aerial threat," says Christian Brose, chief strategy officer at Anduril. This kind of aerial threat has come to define the conflict in Ukraine, where Ukrainian and Russian forces are locked in an arms race involving large numbers of cheap drones capable of loitering autonomously before attacking a target by delivering an explosive payload. These systems, which include US-made Switchblades on the Ukrainian side, can evade jamming and ground defenses and may need to be shot down by either a fighter jet or a missile that costs many times more to use.

Israel's terrifying arsenal of ROBOT weaponry: How AI-powered turrets, remote-control boats and unmanned attack bots will be used as the IDF prepares for a full-scale ground invasion of Gaza
Along the border wall separating Israel and the Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of soldiers are making the final preparations for a full-scale ground invasion. But soon, the sight of massed troops might seem as much a relic of the past as knights on horseback appear to us now. That's because the wars of the future will not only be fought by humans, but also by machines. Already, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has developed and deployed a staggering arsenal of robotic and autonomous weapons which may soon see their first deployment at scale. From AI-powered turrets and drones to robotic tanks and boats these terrifying weapons will soon play a critical role in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Russian missiles continue hitting Ukraine's power, water facilities
Ret. Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg joined'Your World' to discuss NATO holding nuclear exercises and recent Iranian-made'kamikaze' drones striking Kyiv. Russia military forces continued airstrikes against Ukraine on Tuesday, bombing the country's energy and infrastructure facilities as part of aggressive efforts to weaken Ukraine as winter looms. Zhytomyr, a Ukrainian city with military bases, had no working electricity or water after a double missile strike hit an energy facility. According to Mayor Serhiy Sukhomlyn, local hospitals were forced to operate on backup power. An energy facility in Kyiv was also hit by Russian drones, along with another facility in the south-central city of Dnipro.

Is science fiction or reality? Is Russia using artificial intelligence weapons in Ukraine?
The drone, loaded with explosives, crashed without exploding, crashing its nose into its stomach like a dead fish, twisting its rear propeller and crashing or firing. Initially overthrown by Ukrainian forces. The image of the plane quickly spread on social media, and armament experts have identified it as the "KUB-BLA" model produced by Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov's drone division "Sala Aero", colloquially known as the "Comics Drone". It can fly spontaneously to a specific area and then hover around it for up to 30 minutes before exploding itself, like a suicide bomber does. The most advanced Comicase suicide planes today belong to the category of weapons known as automatic weapons, and are considered by experts to be the third revolution in the world of war after gunpowder and nuclear weapons. The evolution from landmines to guided missiles was a precursor to true AI-powered autonomy.
